The Sunday Reset That Keeps Our Family of 7 From Starting Monday in Chaos

If Monday mornings at your house sometimes feel like everyone woke up already behind… same. πŸ˜‚

With five kids, school, sports, laundry, meals, practices, appointments, and about a million places to be, I’ve learned that I can’t completely eliminate the chaos. That’s just real life in this season.

But I can make it a little easier.

Over time, I’ve started doing a simple Sunday reset that helps our home β€” and honestly, me β€” feel a little more prepared going into the week. Nothing fancy. No three-hour cleaning routine or perfectly organized refrigerator required.

Just a handful of things that make Monday morning Erin very thankful for Sunday night Erin. πŸ˜‚

So if you’re heading into another busy week feeling like you’re already trying to catch up, here are the things that have helped us most.

1. Get the Week Out of My Head

One of the biggest things that overwhelms me isn’t necessarily how much we have going on β€” it’s trying to remember all of it.

So before a new week starts, I look at our family calendar and make sure I know what’s coming. Practices, games, school events, appointments, meetings, anything my husband has going on… all of it.

With five kids, there is almost always somewhere someone needs to be. πŸ˜‚ Having it all in one place means I’m not waking up Monday morning suddenly remembering that someone needs a uniform washed, a permission slip signed, or a ride somewhere that night.

I don’t necessarily plan every minute of our week. I just want to know what’s coming so I can plan around the busy instead of constantly reacting to it.

2. Figure Out the Food Before Everyone Is Hungry

Nothing makes a busy week feel more chaotic than realizing at 4:30 that I have absolutely no idea what we’re having for dinner. πŸ˜‚

On Sundays, I take a few minutes to look at our schedule and loosely plan our meals around what we actually have going on that week. Or sometimes I’ll have the kids each select a day to choose our meal. It’s fun to let them be more involved in the decisions.

If we have practices or games, I know those aren’t the nights to plan something that takes an hour to make. Those are crockpot, easy dinners, leftovers, or grab-and-go nights. On the nights we’re actually home, I can plan something that takes a little more time.

I also try to make sure we have easy breakfast options, lunch stuff, and snacks ready for the week. I’m not spending hours meal prepping or putting everything into perfectly matching containers. πŸ˜‚ I just want Monday morning to come and know we have food in the house and somewhat of a plan.

The goal isn’t to plan the perfect week. It’s to make fewer decisions when I’m already tired.

3. Reset the Spaces That Make the Biggest Difference

I used to think a Sunday reset meant cleaning the entire house before Monday.

Nope. πŸ˜‚

With five kids, I could spend my entire Sunday cleaning and somebody would be right behind me undoing it. So instead, I focus on the spaces that make the biggest difference in how Monday morning feels.

For us, that’s usually the kitchen, the main living areas, and the places where all the stuff tends to pile up. (ahem, kitchen island)

I clear off the counters, make sure the sink isn’t full of dishes, have the kids pick up their things, and do a quick reset of the main floor. Nothing needs to be spotless. I just don’t want to wake up Monday morning already feeling behind because Sunday’s mess is still staring at me.

And honestly? A clear kitchen counter might not solve all of my problems…but it sure makes me feel like I have my life together for approximately five minutes. πŸ˜‚

I’m not resetting the whole house. I’m resetting the spaces that affect us the most.

4. Prep the Things That Cause Morning Panic

There are certain things I know have the potential to send our mornings completely off the rails. πŸ˜‚

Someone can’t find their shoes. A water bottle disappeared. We’re supposed to wear a certain color to school that nobody remembered. Someone needs a uniform that is, of course, still sitting in the laundry basket.

You know…the usual.

So on Sunday, I try to think through what everyone needs for Monday and the first few days of the week.

I check backpacks and school papers, look ahead at sports practices and games, make sure uniforms are clean, and try to get the things we need where they actually belong.

Do I always remember everything? Absolutely not. πŸ˜‚

But even taking 10–15 minutes to get ahead of a few of those things makes such a difference.

Because the goal isn’t a perfectly organized Monday morning. It’s simply fewer people yelling, β€œMOM! WHERE IS MY _____?!” at 7:15 a.m.

5. Give Myself a Little Head Start Too

For the longest time, my Sunday reset was basically a list of things I needed to do for everyone else.

Kids? Ready.
Laundry? Done.
Food? Planned.
Calendar? Checked.

Meanwhile, I would roll into Monday morning already feeling behind. πŸ˜‚

So now I try to do one or two little things for myself too.

Sometimes that’s making sure the coffee is ready to go. Sometimes it’s looking at what I need to get done that week, setting out my workout clothes, or just taking a few minutes Sunday night to sit down after everyone is settled.

Nothing major. And definitely not some elaborate Sunday self-care routine. πŸ˜‚

It’s really just asking myself, β€œWhat can I do tonight that will make tomorrow-me thankful?”

Because I’m part of this family too. And I’ve learned that when I start the week feeling a little more prepared, everything else seems to run a little smoother.

The Sunday reset isn’t just about getting our house ready for Monday. It’s about helping me feel ready for it too.

Making Room for a Little Less Chaos

I know a Sunday reset isn’t going to magically make our week run perfectly.

Someone will still forget something. We’ll still have nights when the schedule changes at the last minute. There will still be laundry. So. Much. Laundry. πŸ˜‚

But I’ve learned that I don’t need everything perfectly organized to feel a little more in control. Sometimes I just need to take a few minutes, look at what’s ahead, and make a little room for the things that matter.

That’s really what I’m hoping to share here at Mama Make Some Room β€” simple things that make home, motherhood, and everyday life feel a little lighter.

Not perfect homes.
Not perfect routines.
Definitely not perfect motherhood.

Just real-life things that actually help. ❀️

And if Monday still starts with someone yelling that they can’t find their shoes…well, there’s always coffee. β˜•πŸ˜‚
