What I Do When My House Feels Completely Out of Control
You know when your house gets to that point where there’s just stuff everywhere?
That happens here ALL the time.
Someone drops their backpack by the door. There are papers all over the kitchen island. Someone left a cup on the table. There are shoes everywhere. Random toys somehow made their way upstairs. And before I know it, I look around and think…okay, this house is driving me crazy. 😂
With seven people living here, it really doesn’t take much for things to start feeling out of control.
But here’s what I’ve figured out about myself over the years — I don’t actually need my entire house to be clean to feel better.
I really just need my main floor picked up.
We have an unfinished basement where the kids’ bedrooms and toy area are, and honestly, that’s kind of their space. Do I want them to keep it picked up? Of course. 😂 But I’m also not going downstairs every night making sure every toy is put away and every bedroom is perfect.
The main floor, though?
That’s my space. 😂
And when there’s clutter everywhere up here, I can feel myself getting overwhelmed by it.
So when the house gets to that point where I don’t even know where to start, I’ve stopped trying to tackle the whole thing.
I start with the main floor.
I clear off the island. I clear the kitchen table. The kids grab anything of theirs that has made its way upstairs, and everyone handles their chores.
And honestly, once that main floor is picked up, I already feel about 100 times better.
Is the whole house clean? Nope.
Is there probably still a mess downstairs? Absolutely. 😂
But the space I’m spending most of my time in feels calm again — and sometimes that’s really all I need.
I Start With the Kitchen Island
Our kitchen island seems to be the place where everyone drops everything.
School papers. Mail. Water bottles. Random things the kids bring home. Stuff that needs to be put away but apparently no one knows where it belongs. 😂
And when that counter is covered, the entire kitchen feels messy to me — even if it really isn’t.
So that’s usually where I start.
I clear everything off, put away what actually has a home, throw away what we don’t need, and deal with the random pile of papers that somehow appears overnight.
It’s such a small thing, but having that one big surface completely cleared off immediately makes the whole main floor feel calmer.
It’s my quick win.

Sometimes I don’t need to clean the whole house. I just need one clear surface to make everything feel a little more manageable.
I Clear the Kitchen Table
Next up is the kitchen table.
And somehow, even though its actual purpose is for us to eat at it, it has a way of becoming another place where things get dropped throughout the day. 😂
Papers, cups, things the kids were working on, random stuff that needs to go somewhere else…it adds up fast.
So when I’m trying to get the main floor back under control, I clear the table completely.
There’s something about having both the island and the kitchen table cleared off that instantly changes how the whole space feels.
It doesn’t mean the whole house is clean. And it definitely doesn’t mean there isn’t a mess waiting for me somewhere downstairs. 😂
But I can walk into my kitchen and actually see clear surfaces again.
And for me, that makes the whole house feel more manageable.
I’ve learned that sometimes the things that make the biggest difference aren’t the huge cleaning projects.
They’re the little visual resets that tell my brain:
Okay. We’re back under control.
The Kids Know the Main Floor Is My Space
One thing that helps is that the kids already know how I feel about the main floor. 😂
Their bedrooms and toy area are downstairs, and that’s their space. I’m not expecting that part of the house to look perfect all the time.
But if their shoes, toys, backpacks, clothes or whatever else have made their way onto the main floor, they know it’s time to grab their stuff and take it back downstairs.
I’m not walking around putting five kids’ things away for them.
If you brought it upstairs, you can take it back down. 😂
Just getting everyone’s stuff back into the spaces where it belongs makes a HUGE difference without me having to do all of it myself.
Everyone Does Their Part
Once the clutter is picked up, this is usually when I have the kids knock out their regular chores.
And listen…does everyone happily jump up and start cleaning the second I ask?
Absolutely not. 😂
There are usually reminders. Someone suddenly needs a snack. Someone can’t find the cleaning supplies that have been in the same place forever. You know how it goes.
But with seven people living in this house, I’ve learned that I can’t be the only person responsible for getting it back in order.
Everyone lives here, so everyone can help.
The kids each have their own chores, and when the house is starting to feel like too much, having everyone pitch in gets us back to manageable SO much faster than me running around trying to do everything myself.
And honestly, I think that’s been a big shift for me.
I don’t have to do everything just because I’m the mom.
Sometimes getting the house back under control looks like me clearing the counters while the kids are handling their own jobs.
Is everything done exactly the way I would do it?
Nope. 😂
But it’s done.
And I’m learning that sometimes done is plenty good enough.
I Don’t Need the Whole House Clean
At the end of all of this, the basement might still be a mess.
There may still be laundry waiting for me.
Somebody’s bedroom is probably questionable. 😂
But when I walk through the main floor and the counters are clear, the table is clean, the clutter is gone and things feel a little calmer…I’m good.
I’ve realized I don’t need every part of my house under control at the same time.
I just need the space around me to feel manageable.
And if you’re standing in your own house right now looking around thinking, Where in the world do I even start? — maybe don’t start with the whole house.
Pick the space that bothers you the most.
Maybe it’s your kitchen counters. Maybe it’s the living room. Maybe it’s the pile by the front door that everyone keeps walking past like it doesn’t exist. 😂
Start there.
You might be surprised how much better the whole house feels when you stop trying to fix everything and just make one space feel good again.
